A Seashore Excursion: Thoreau and Cape Cod: Richard Smith

July 20, 2021 @ 7:00 pm

Although Henry David Thoreau is best known for the two years he lived at Waldon Pond in Concord, Ma. he traveled outside of Concord a great deal and one of his favorite places to visit was Cape Cod. Thoreau went down Cape (as they say in Massachusetts) three times during his lifetime, but what a great three weeks it was! Thoreau spent most of his time walking, exploring, observing and writing about the landscape and people he encountered, on the Cape. No other writer has captured Cape Cod in the way that Thoreau did in his writing. Join Concord Historian Richard Smith as he talks about Thoreau’s trips to Cape Cod. Using Thoreau’s own words and reading from Thoreau’s journal, you will experience 19th Century Cape Cod through Thoreau’s eyes. Richard Smith has lectured on and written about antebellum United States and 19th-Century American literature since 1995. He has worked as a public historian in Concord, Massachusetts for 22 years, specializing in Henry David Thoreau, the Transcendentalists, the Anti-Slavery movement and the Civil War.
