Who Lives in Winchester?

Who Lives in Winchester?  Housing Options – Past and Future, is the title of a two-part zoom program presented by the Network for Social Justice, the Planning Board, and the Winchester Housing Partnership Board, on Wednesday evenings April 28^th and May 26^th from 7:30 – 9 pm.

In Part I we will look at the history of housing in Winchester, including the Residential Security Map (i.e. redlining map) of the town published in 1938.  We will be making the connection between that history and the Winchester we are living in now.   In Part II we will focus on our commitment to diversifying the housing opportunities in our community, and ways to address the inequities that are the result of historic and current policies and practices. We will hear from local housing experts, as well as draw on resources from the field.

Winchester completed a comprehensive master planning process last year that identified shared values and goals, including:  to create and preserve affordable and accessible housing; to expand community initiatives that increase diversity; and to build a welcoming and supportive community that promotes well-being and positive mental health for all.

The process of reaching these goals through housing initiatives is long overdue in Winchester.  We are excited to be offering this joint program to promote conversations about both the historical context that created the Winchester we know today, and what we need to do to move Winchester toward a community that is both more diverse and inclusive.
